Periodization is the practice of organizing training into phases that vary volume and intensity over time, and for most lifters the honest answer is simpler than the marketing suggests: linear, block and undulating models all work, and the differences between them are modest compared with the basics of progressive overload, consistency and effort. That does not make the choice meaningless. Each model was built for a specific problem, and matching the model to your schedule, experience and sport is where the real value lies.

Periodization is a planning structure that divides a training year — or mesocycles of roughly three to six weeks — into blocks with different emphasis: more total reps when the loads are lighter, fewer reps when the loads are heavy, and planned recovery phases so adaptation can consolidate. How does linear periodization work?

Linear periodization — sometimes called classic or traditional periodization — moves from high volume and low intensity toward low volume and high intensity across a cycle. A lifter might spend four weeks at three sets of ten at moderate loads, then four weeks of five reps heavier, then four weeks of triples near maximum, then a deload before the cycle repeats at a higher level.

Block periodization concentrates one or two compatible qualities per block instead of touching everything each week.
